Goodwood Golf Club
West Sussex, South East, England
On a summer’s evening in 1892 six local men met to bring golf to the Chichester and the neighbouring areas. Although a low key affair the new club immediately had 22 members including members of the clergy and a couple of unmarried ladies. Around the turn of the century the sixth Duke of Richmond’s family, notably his daughter, took great interest in the game of golf. So when the nine hole golf course fell on financially difficult times, largely due to such a small membership, the Duke offered to move the golf club to the former Kennels on the Goodwood Estate. This building still stands today and has the original flintwork but the interior has been subject to much modification to accommodate the modern gofers’ needs. More recently the golf course itself went under a major renovation in 2004 to bring it in line with today’s standards.
