Located in the North Central region, County Westmeath was named after the ancient kingdom of Mide, which means ‘middle.' The county's Hill of Uisneach is even thought of as Ireland's geographic center. Westmeath is most known for its abundance of water and fertile farmland. It is home to more than 10 lakes, including Lough Ree, the second largest lake on the River Shannon that is popular for fishing and boating. Known for its eel fishing, the lake is locally known for its "eels on wheels" truck. The Grand Canal and the Royal Canal both flow through Westmeath as well. Beef and dairy are the county's most popular industries, it is said that the town of Mullingar has some of the highest quality beef and veal in the world.
Besides farming, golf is also a growing industry in the county. Westmeath is home to several well known parkland golf courses, including Glasson Golf & Country Club, which sits on a peninsula surrounded by Lough Ree. Athlone Golf Club is another course situated along the banks of the lake. Founded in 1892, it is one of the oldest clubs in the country.Find your next tee time at golf courses in County Westmeath today.
